Is Hyperemesis Gravidarum a Common Condition?

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a severe form of morning sickness that affects many women. It is estimated that somewhere around 1% of women will experience Hyperemesis Gravidarum. This means that Hyperemesis Gravidarum is much more common than we would like it to be. Hyperemesis Gravidarum can be dangerous to both the mother and to her baby.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is marked by specific symptoms. When you have Hyperemesis Gravidarum, you will not be able to keep an adequate amount of fluids or of food down. It is common for Hyperemesis Gravidarum to cause a number of problems, if it is left untreated. Among other things, Hyperemesis Gravidarum can cause hypoglycemia, malnutrition, renal failure, atrophy, and a whole host of other ailments and problems for the mother. IN terms of the baby, Hyperemesis Gravidarum can put the baby at a risk of birth defects, as the iron, folic acid, and other ingredients in prenatal vitamins have been demonstrated to reduce the risk of birth defects.

If it goes untreated, Hyperemesis Gravidarum can lead to hypoglycemia, malnutrition, renal failure, atrophy, and a whole host of other ailments and problems for the mother. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is considered to be a medical emergency. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is most often treated with an IV which will provide rehydration, as well as nutritional elements that both mother and baby need. It is common for a health care provider to prescribe certain anti-nausea medications, as well, because the risk of Hyperemesis Gravidarum can often outweigh the risk of side effects from the medications.

If you are pregnant and have been vomiting severely or excessively for more than a day or so, and have not been able to keep anything down, you should contact your health care provider. Your health care provider may recommend that you go to the emergency room or the hospital. If you are unable to contact your health care provider, it is imperative that you seek help in an emergency room right away.
